2024 GMC Terrain vs. the Competition

2024 GMC Terrain vs. the Competition | Concord, NH

The 2024 GMC Terrain is a bold, exciting SUV that’s perfect for smart drivers in Concord, New Hampshire. And if you’re considering a new Mazda CX-5 or Mazda CX-50, you’ll be pleased to learn that the Terrain offers all kinds of advantages over the competition.

2024 GMC Terrain vs. 2024 Mazda CX-5

If you’re in the market for a cushy SUV that respects your wallet and turns heads only for the right reasons, you’ve come to the right place. But between the GMC Terrain and Mazda CX-5, which should you choose? Let’s take a quick look at how they compare.

Price

One thing is clear when comparing Terrain and CX-5 prices: the Terrain wins. Though both models start at a similar price (a $600 advantage for the Terrain), the top end is much more in GMC’s favor. The range-topping Terrain Denali starts at $38,600, undercutting the range-topping CX-5 2.5 Turbo Signature by $2,000.[1]

Space

Do you get more space in the CX-5 for that pricier MSRP? Not really. The Terrain has more maximum cargo volume, more front-row headroom and hip room, and more shoulder room across both rows. If you have second-row passengers, there’s just more room to get comfortable in the Terrain, and if you’re using that second row for cargo instead, the Terrain has the edge there too.

Luxury

Premium features have always helped GMC models stand apart, and this is no exception. Despite being more affordable than the CX-5’s luxury option, the Terrain Denali comes with desirable features like French-stitched leather seats and the Denali Premium Suspension with Enhanced Shock Control, both greatly boosting comfort. The Terrain also comes with an AT4 trim that offers awesome off-road capability that the CX-5 can’t match.

2024 GMC Terrain vs. 2024 Mazda CX-50

Launched for the 2023 model year and based on the CX-30, the Mazda CX-50 is like a slightly larger version of the CX-5 that aims to capture customers with a more active lifestyle. Unfortunately for the CX-50, however, the GMC Terrain still manages to one-up it, especially with the AT4 trim.

Price

In this segment, GMC’s budget-friendly appeal continues to beat Mazda. The 2024 Terrain’s MSRP ranges from $28,700 to $38,600 depending on trim level, while the 2024 CX-50’s MSRP ranges from $30,300 to $43,300.[1] If you’d rather put your money toward other things, or simply save it for options, the GMC Terrain offers more value.

Space

Inside the Terrain, you’ll find slightly more space for passengers and significantly more space for cargo. The trunk can hold up to 63.3 cubic feet of stuff compared to only 56.3 cubic feet in the CX-50. Headroom and shoulder room are also superior in the Terrain, while legroom and hip room are comparable. This is surprising because, on the outside, the Mazda is both larger and longer. In other words, the Terrain is a better-designed, compact package.

Off-road

The main appeal of the CX-50 is its off-road features, but the Terrain AT4 does even better in that regard. Unlike the Mazda, this capable GMC SUV gets a standard front skid plate for underbody protection. It also comes with Hill Descent Control, an AWD Traction Select System with Off-Road Mode, and a whole host of exclusive designs and accents, like black chrome exterior finishes and gloss-black wheels.
